Playing sports is a
great way for children to stay physically fit and healthy while having fun. Anyone who has played any sport knows
the importance for being healthy so they can play at their best. Sports physicals aren’t just for kids,
professional athletes get regular sports physicals to make sure they are healthy
and strong before hitting the field!
In order to participate
in school sports or attend camps, state regulations require that you have a
sports or participation physical. Sports physicals should be done well
before your sport or camp begins. The physical exam enables your
healthcare provider to update your health profile. Sports physicals are a great
preventative measure for your child’s health.
Even if your sport does
not require a physical and your child seems healthy, a physical should be done
on every child, once a year, who will be participating in organized
sports.
What to bring with you to your
appointment:
ü Your medical history form provided by your school or camp. If one is not provided, your doctor
should be able to provide the form.
ü A list of all over-the-counter medications you are taking, including
herbs and vitamins
ü A list of any prescription medications and their
dosage
During the Physical Examination, your healthcare provider
will:
Ø Record
your
height and weight
Ø Take a blood pressure and pulse reading
Ø Test your vision
Ø Check your heart, lungs, abdomen, ears, nose, and
throat
Ø Evaluate your posture, joints, and nervous
system
If, while playing sports, you notice a shortness of breath, dizziness,
muscle pain, cramping, or anything that causes you to feel uncomfortable, please
mention this immediately to your coach, parent, or athletic trainer. It
may be a sign of a more serious condition that should be monitored or
treated.
I am excited to be able to provide information on sports related health
issues here on the DADS club website.
I grew up playing DADS club soccer and softball since third grade. As soon as I was old enough I started
refereeing soccer for DADS club and did that for years. Playing DADS club sports taught me
important life lessons like hard work, teamwork, and responsibility.
I am very excited to be able to give back to DADS Club as both a
volunteer coach and now as a health resource for other parents. Please check back to the site every
month or so for new articles, and health hints.
Thanks and keep the game fun.
